What is Latin Dancing?
Latin dance is a general label that refers to various forms of ballroom and social dances. It can include a wide range of dances originating in Latin America, including Puerto Rico and Cuba, such us Salsa, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Mambo, Merengue, Bachata, Paso Doble, Bolero and Cumbia.
Salsa’s roots are based on Afro-Cuban Rumba and Son dancing. Therefore, Salsa is a combination of different dance forms with origins in Cuba as the meeting point of Spanish (European) and African cultures. It is open to improvisation and thus it is continuously evolving. Today, there are many various styles of salsa dancing because of geographical dispersion and cultural syncretism. The most well-known styles are Cuban-style, LA-style, New York-style, Puerto Rican-style, Cali-style (from Colombia). Even though there are a variety of styles, they all share the same weight change and hip action called Cuban Motion which comes from Rumba.
